Netdata vs Fivenines: where do your metrics live?

Netdata combines an open-source agent with local dashboards and optional Netdata Cloud access. Its Agents and Parents store the metrics on your infrastructure; the Cloud provides a central view. It already covers host metrics, containers, services and Proxmox, so those capabilities alone are not a reason to switch.

Fivenines hosts the monitoring platform and metric history. You install the agent and configure the collectors and checks your environment needs. Choose this model when you want to operate your servers without also maintaining the storage for their monitoring history. See the Linux server monitoring coverage for supported systems and collector prerequisites.

Why teams consider Fivenines instead of Netdata

  • Hosted metric history

Fivenines manages metric storage, with 24 months of retention on every plan. You still control which supported collectors and checks run in your environment.

  • External uptime checks

Check HTTPS, TCP, ICMP and DNS from managed probe regions alongside host metrics. Netdata also supports agent-based availability checks; the difference is where the checks run and who operates the probes.

  • Response and customer updates

Use Fivenines workflows to route alerts and open incidents, keep a timeline, and publish customer-facing updates to a status page. Evaluate that response process as part of your monitoring trial.

When Netdata might be a better fit

Keep Netdata when local control of metric storage, per-second troubleshooting or its broad collector catalog is central to your setup. Its free agent may already cover your needs, and Netdata Cloud adds a central view without moving your metric storage into the SaaS. Fivenines is a paid managed option for teams that prefer hosted history and its monitoring and response workflows.

Netdata and Fivenines pricing

The Netdata agent is free and collects and streams metrics from any number of nodes. Without a paid plan, its dashboards show up to five nodes, whether you use the local dashboard or Netdata Cloud Community, which is for personal use. Netdata also offers a personal-use Homelab plan. Business Cloud is listed at $4.50 per node per month with annual billing.

Fivenines Starter is €19/month with monthly billing for 15 monitors. Servers, uptime checks, cron tasks and other monitor types share that allowance. Five servers, five uptime checks and five cron tasks use all 15 monitors. Higher plans change limits and feature access.

These are different billing units, currencies and billing periods. Price the inventory and features you actually need, including the storage you operate for Netdata, before comparing total costs.

Evaluate the switch before retiring Netdata

  1. Pilot a representative host. Check the collectors, sampling interval and resource use against your workload. For virtualized infrastructure, review the Proxmox monitoring scope against your cluster needs.
  2. Recreate and test your checks. Configure thresholds and recipients, then verify an alert and its recovery. Compare Netdata's agent-side checks with the external network paths you want Fivenines probes to observe.
  3. Keep the history you need. Fivenines starts collecting new metrics. It does not import Netdata history or configuration, so retain your existing data until you no longer need it.

Start with one host whose normal workload you know. Use the 14-day trial to check the metrics and notification path above before moving the rest of your fleet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose Fivenines as a Netdata alternative? +
Choose Fivenines when you want hosted metric history, external uptime probes, public status pages and incident workflows in one managed service. Netdata already provides detailed host, container, service and Proxmox monitoring, with local dashboards and optional Cloud access. The main storage difference is that Netdata keeps metrics on your Agents or Parents, while Fivenines hosts the metric history.
Is Netdata free, and is Fivenines a free alternative? +
The Netdata open-source agent is free and collects metrics from any number of nodes. Without a paid plan, its dashboards show up to five nodes, and Netdata Cloud Community is for personal use; larger or commercial deployments use a paid plan. Fivenines has a 14-day trial, then paid plans. Starter costs €19/month with monthly billing for 15 monitors shared by servers, uptime checks, cron tasks and other monitor types.
Does Netdata support uptime monitoring? +
Yes. Netdata's HTTP, ping, TCP port and DNS collectors check availability and response time from the agent node where they are configured. Fivenines runs external HTTPS, TCP, ICMP and DNS checks from managed probe regions. Choose the network vantage points you need; an agent-side check and an external probe can observe different failures.
Does Fivenines collect as many metrics as Netdata? +
Netdata offers a broad collector catalog and per-second metrics for detailed troubleshooting. Fivenines collects host metrics every 60 seconds by default and adds supported service and container collectors, hosted history and workflows. Check the specific collectors, sampling interval and retention your workload needs before switching.
Which agent uses less memory? +
Memory and CPU use depend on the enabled collectors, collection interval, workload and local data retention. Netdata can store history on Agents or Parents, while Fivenines stores it in the hosted platform. Run a pilot on a representative host and measure the resource use of each setup under normal and peak load.
Can I switch from Netdata Cloud to Fivenines? +
Pilot Fivenines on a representative host while retaining Netdata. Recreate the checks, thresholds and recipients you rely on, then verify alert delivery and recovery. Installing the Fivenines agent starts a new metric history; it does not import Netdata data or configuration. Keep your existing history for as long as you need it before retiring the old setup.
